"Baton Rouge is ranked #2 in the country
with the highest rates of AIDS cases
for the second year in the row!
Dear Community Leader:
Thank you for taking the time to consider
supporting Baton Rouge AIDS Society’s local HIV testing campaign. June 27, 2011, marks National HIV
Testing Day (NHTD) which is an annual campaign produced by the National Association of People with AIDS ( NAPWA-US) to encourage at-risk individuals to receive
voluntary HIV counseling and testing. Baton Rouge AIDS Society, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization,
is hosting its 4th Annual National Testing Day Golf Tournament. Our theme is “Take a Swing at HIV” - Preventing the Spread of HIV By Enhancing Testing Opportunities.
July of 2008 marked the first year that Baton Rouge AIDS Society’s testing efforts were supported directly from
the community. With support from the Junior League, Pennington, Elton John Foundation and many citizens
of the Greater Baton Rouge area, we have been able to continue our testing efforts throughout Region II. Since
then, we have tested over 2,000 people and identified 39 positive individuals. Baton Rouge AIDS Society
is the first agency in the area that has committed to testing through mobile unit efforts within various communities.
In addition, it is the only agency that offers FREE HIV Testing throughout Region II (From Jackson and St. Francisville
to Gonzales and Donaldsonville). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 180,000 to 280,000 people nationwide are
HIV-positive but are unaware of their status. HIV counseling and testing enables people with HIV to take steps to protect
their own health and that of their partners, and helps people who test negative to get the information they need to stay uninfected.
Our
tournament is designed to raise money for the following activities:
HIV Testing and Referral Services
HIV Testing Mobile Unit
HIV Testing Client Incentives
HIV
Testing Staff Development/Education
Gaps in Client Services After Testing
Peer Health Education Training
